Helping farmers through tough times
We are going through worrying times.
The Patron of the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution, Her Majesty The Queen, has written of "a very sombre national mood." Throughout these periods we must cherish those that mean everything to us personally, family, friends and our communities.
The support and help given in any circumstances is valued and treasured.
The worries and concerns in the farming community, ebb and flow, with the unknown situation of Brexit talks, the weather, the market prices on goods which all can cause anxieties. The farming charity RABI is always there for individuals and families, rather than struggling businesses.
It gives grants to people of all ages. Nationwide in 2017 so far, 983 families have been helped and over £863,000 has been paid out.
There is the continuous care given to the family of "Mark," a young farmer with a wife and two small children, who had an accident on the farm. Paralysed from the neck down, he spent the rest of his life, over 20 years, in a wheelchair. RABI purchased specialist equipment to make his life more bearable, and now provides caring support for his widow.
The farming community copes and cares greatly for its people, with a positive outlook on life, but when troubles come it takes courage to ask for help. If you are concerned about someone, please try to persuade them to phone on Freephone Helpline 0808 281 9490, or you can call on their behalf. The welfare officer who is the contact, will help with total compassion and confidentiality to make sure that the best advice can be given to guide people through their difficult times.
We are also fortunate in Shropshire to have a Rural Support Helpline 0300 123 2825 who can also listen and give guidance.
Every penny raised as a donation from RABI fundraising events is spent back in the county. We are grateful to the businesses who sponsor, and the wonderful support from family and friends who come to functions organised by the Shropshire committee. The recent county NFU chairman’s lunch at Oswestry made a magnificient £6,600, and the ladies lunch and fashion show kindly hosted by the Roberts family made over £3,600.
There will be a ‘Taste of Shropshire’ evening on Sunday July 23 at 6pm near Wroxeter. Come and meet the makers and sample local food delights. Tickets are £10 to include drink on arrival and canapes.
If you would like to be involved or come to an event please contact regional manager Kate Jones 07876 492839 or email kate.jones@rabi.org.uk
