I don't even mind early starts, says apprentice

To celebrate the achievements of its apprentices, Walford and North Shropshire College has chosen a Star Apprentice for each curriculum area the college has apprentices working in, writes Oli Lloyd.

Oli Lloyd is completing his Level 2 apprenticeship in agriculture. He started his apprenticeship straight after secondary school and is now working on a dairy farm.

He said: "My work on the farm involves feeding, littering, scraping out bedding, general duties. I help out with milking the 110 milking cows and I also do some arable work as well."

Some parts of the apprenticeship are knowledge-based. Oli added: "Working on a mixed farm enabled me to complete a project on maize."

On the advantages of doing an apprenticeship, he said: "I have learned a lot from the experienced staff. Being able to do the course and earn money at the same time was important to me.

"I have learned new skills while doing my apprenticeship, such as safely working with livestock and how to handle them. I have also qualified as a tele-handler. I have been getting help from my assessor, Graham Holt. He has been very supportive."

He added: "I've enjoyed everything. There's nothing I dislike. I don't even mind getting up early. When I finish the apprenticeship, I am hoping to work full-time on the farm."

Agricultural apprenticeships are available at both Level 2 and 3. Small businesses can access a £1,500 grant via the college for taking on an apprentice for the duration of their study.
