Continuing to root out dirty cops must be 'front and centre' for West Mercia's new chief constable, according to the region's police and crime commissioner.

West Mercia Police will soon begin the process of looking for a new chief constable, after its current chief, Pippa Mills announced her decision to leave to rejoin the Met Police as an assistant commissioner.

Her departure date is yet to be confirmed but once agreed, John Campion, West Mercia's Police and Crime Commissioner, will be leading the recruitment process for a replacement.

Mr Campion has been speaking of his expectations for Chief Constable Mills' successor – and the priorities for the role.

West Mercia has seen a number of recent incidents where officers have been sacked, faced criminal, or disciplinary proceedings over their conduct.

Mr Campion said the current Chief Constable had shown her commitment to tackling the issue, and he said those aims would continue to be vital for her replacement.

He said: "Pippa has shown over the last 23 months, and indeed her predecessor, the commitment to ensure that those that wear the uniform and serve in West Mercia have the right standards of behaviour, and has led the challenge to make sure those that do not have the right standards are rooted out of policing, and that has to be front and centre of what the new chief constable has on day one – the continuation of that work."
