Telford Police said they had made the arrests, including one driver who tried to get out of their car with their seatbelt on, on Saturday night.

Three of the people were arrested for drink driving and the other two were for drug driving.

Posting on Twitter Telford Police said: "Five in the cells. Five off to court. Five driving bans pending. Five less idiots on the road."

Following the announcement Chief Superintendent Tom Harding, local policing lead for West Mercia Police, praised the efforts of officers who had caught the drivers.

He said: "I believe we have come a long way re: drink driving becoming increasingly socially unacceptable but drug driving is increasing! We will continue to police our roads robustly and seek to make them safer for all.

"Great work Telford cops, those five people are waking up in a cell."

Those were not the only arrests in the county as Shropshire's Operational Policing Unit revealed it had seized six vehicles yesterday – all driven without insurance.

Writing on twitter they posted: "On a sleepy Sunday night we as a team have seized six vehicles driven without insurance and arrested six people. Three for drug driving. One wanted on warrant. Two after a pursuit in Telford with stolen fuel barrels in the boot."
