Tyler Love, 19, of Parkside, Telford, had been sentenced to 12 weeks in prison in June for stealing £180 worth of perfume from a Debenhams in Telford.

Love, who has a string of previous convictions for theft appealed the sentence and on Friday it was granted at Shrewsbury Crown Court, with a suspended sentence imposed on him.

Kevin Jones, prosecuting, said on May 30 Love had gone into the store and staff members were concerned about his behaviour, as he had moved items towards the exit of the store.

He then left the store with the items and was perused by a member of staff. He then dropped the items and ran off.

He admitted to police he deliberately went to the store to steal, because he needed money to pay a drug debt.

At the time of the offence he was also out on licence after being jailed in January for 28 weeks.

He added Love had been subject to a range of orders in 2016 due to a number of offences.

Peter Hemming, defending, said his client appealed his sentence immediately and was granted bail.

He told the judge Love had been put into care when he was 16 and since then things had gone “some what awry.”

Mr Hemming added this was not helped by his clients used of cannabis, however said he was not using the class B drug anymore and had been making considerable progress with probation.

The lodging of the appeal had given him a gap for probation to work with him on his offending.

Judge Gosling said that Love needed to stop his offending, and that due to his progress he was prepared to give him a chance.

He was given 12 weeks in prison suspended for two years and ordered to complete 60 hours of unpaid work.

Judge Gosling warned Love: “You must not go into a shop and steal or if you are in possession of cannabis there won’t be another chance, you will have to service this sentence.”
