Research by housing charity Shelter suggests 354,000 people in England are homeless, a 14 per cent jump from this time last year.

The charity said its figures are "the most comprehensive overview of recorded homelessness in England".

Across Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin, Shelter estimates 710 people will be homeless this Christmas, including 289 children.

The data suggests that one in 698 people are homeless in the Telford & Wrekin Council area, while one in 729 people are homeless in the Shropshire Council area.

Across the West Midlands, 28,238 people are estimated to be homeless.
