A car crashed into the front of a packed pub, causing a loud bang that sounded "like a bomb going off".

Sharon Hopkins, landlady of the Queen's Head pub in Newtown, has given her account of the moment a silver Hyundai ploughed into it ahead of a charity bingo night on Wednesday.

People inside the pub were led out through the back door.

Police believe the driver had a medical episode which caused him to drive into the pub and another vehicle. He was taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital for treatment, although his injuries were not life-threatening. No-one else was hurt.

The pub was due to reopen last night as normal. Mrs Hopkins said: "It was like a bomb had gone off.

"It was scary because the pub was packed because our charity bingo night was about to start.

"When the car crashed, there was a young woman outside having a cigarette, so she had a close escape. She was pretty shaken up."
