As fire crews pulled the man free he went into cardiac arrest and ambulance workers had to restart his heart.

It is not clear how the incident happened, but it is believed the man in his 60s was only found when a neighbour heard his cries for help.

West Midlands Ambulance Service was called to a property in Lower Wood, Church Stretton at 7.30pm yesterday where the man was trapped by his legs.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman Murray MacGregor said: "The man had severe crush injuries. As he was freed, he suffered a cardiac arrest due to the length of time that he had been trapped.

"After ambulance staff restarted his heart, the man was taken on blue lights to the major trauma centre at the New Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

"His condition is thought to be very serious."

An ambulance, a paramedic area support officer, the MERIT Trauma Doctor and the Hazardous Area Response Team were sent to the scene.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service also attended the scene.
