Sam Relf came face-to-face with Shrewsbury defender Jermaine Grandison at the opening of a new charity shop in the town.

They were joined by manager Micky Mellon, MP Daniel Kawczynski and Shrewsbury mayor, Councillor Myles Kenny for the opening of the new Barnardo's shop at Tilstock Crescent, Sutton Farm.

Gayle McKeon, shop branch manager for the children's charity, said she was delighted with the contribution from the club.

She said: "This is all about making people aware that we are open in the local community and I think it's great that charity shops are opening out of the town centre because it brings something different to the neighbourhood.

"As we are so close to the football club I thought it was perfect to reach out to Shrewsbury Town to try and help get us some more attention and hopefully this will bring more footfall through the shop.

"My dad is a huge fan and even had the day off work to come down today.

"We really appreciate Micky Mellon and Jermaine Grandison coming down.

"Micky has offered us fundraising items for the future and said that if we need anything to just give him a call."

Both Mellon and Grandison took time out of their preparation for today's League One trip to Barnsley to pose for pictures with fans and sign autographs including one leg cast.

Grandison said he was pleased to offer something to the community.

"It's really nice to be invited down," said the 24-year-old.

"It's great to come and meet the fans and people from the area.

"It's a privilege for me to come to this opening today."

Mr Kawczynski added: "All the money goes to transforming the lives of some of the most vulnerable children in the United Kingdom so it's a great cause and there's plenty of great things to buy here.

"I'm becoming increasingly aware of just how much is being done by Shrewsbury Town in the Community (STFC ITC) for good causes and I'm delighted to see them here today."
