Mayor of Market Drayton calls on town to protect each other after woman attacked
The community should pull together after a "horrendous" attack on a young woman in Market Drayton, a civic leader has urged.
Mayor of Market Drayton Tim Beckett has asked people in the area to look out for each other after it was revealed a woman in her twenties was attacked.
The victim was walking home on Sunday night when she was approached from behind. The attacker repeatedly pulled at the woman's clothes and ripped her upper clothing but she struggled free and ran towards the town's golf club, escaping with minor injuries.
Mr Beckett said: "Anyone should be able to walk around the town at any time and feel safe without fear of being attacked. But this is horrendous. Obviously this does not happen very often in our town, but we need to make sure people are kept safe. Everyone should be looking out for each other and if people ever see anything suspicious they should contact the police."
Police have appealed for witnesses to the attack which took place near the junction of Sandy Lane and Sutton Lane. The victim was wearing a white jumper and dark jeans and is about 5ft 1in tall, slim, with dark hair. She left The Vaults pub at about 10.50pm on Sunday and walked past the church and down Kiln Bank Road. She crossed the main road and over the bridge. The attack happened around this time.
Call Shrewsbury CID on 101 quoting incident number 708s of April 5.
