He swapped the cobbles of Coronation Street for cheese. Playing Martin Platt – Gail's hapless on-screen husband – and bringing up his troublemaker son David was actor Sean Wilson's challenge for 21 years.

But since leaving Weatherfield behind, Sean has taken on a new challenge. He has set up Saddleworth Cheese Co, and is now an established trader.

Sean, who was selling his wares at Whitchurch Farmers' Market on Saturday, said he has always had a passion for making cheese even when he was a household name watched by millions of viewers of the ITV soap.

It was the science of how the cheese is made that introduced Sean to his passion, and he was trained by Lancashire cheesemaker Bob Kitching at Leagram Dairy.

Bob was the last person who handmade Lancashire cheese and before he died two years ago he passed on the knowledge to Sean so he could carry on his legacy.

Speaking on his stall in Whitchurch, he said: "When I left Coronation Street I started working at a Michelin star restaurant called Northcote Manor in Lancashire as I have always had a passion for food.

"But it's the science of how cheese is made interested me most, which is how I got to meet Bob.

"He taught me how to hand make cheese and as he is no longer with us I hope I am able to carry on his legacy of handmade cheese," he said.

"This is the first time I have been to Shropshire, but the people have been great and I have been talking to one man who also made his own cheese and it was nice to swap stories.

"I plan on coming to Whitchurch once a month to hold a stall at the market as it is a lovely place and one thing I have noticed is how proud the people of Shropshire are about their cheese.

"There's just more fun in shopping on farmers markets or buying from specialist food shops, I feel that in this country we have some of the best farmers markets in Europe."
