Plans for the 30kW hydropower turbine on the Horseshoe Weir in Ludlow are now set to go ahead – and those behind the scheme are now calling for members of the public to get on board to raise the £370,000 needed to build it.

Members of Ludlow Hydro Co-operative – a group of 12 residents behind the project – have secured planning permission and the necessary Environment Agency licences.

The community share offer to raise the funds will will be launched on February 26.

Everyone that buys shares will become a member of the cooperative, and it will be the first community-owned renewable energy project in the town.

It is hoped the Archimedes screw-style turbine will be installed at the weir next to Ludford Mill during the summer and commissioned in the autumn.

The project has being developed with the support of Shrewsbury-based not-for-profit group Sharenergy.

Angus Marshall, director of Ludlow Hydro Cooperative, said: "We are really excited to be working on this project, which will make use of the great flow on the River Teme. Other community hydro turbines exist across the UK, so we know it can be done."

Next week's launch will be at the Charlton Arms in Ludlow at 7.30pm.
