Campaigners fear no area of Shropshire village is safe over new housing plans

Campaigners opposed to development in a Shropshire conservation area have warned "no area of the village is safe", after a second housing application was submitted in as many months.

Members of campaign group Protect Heritage Edgmond have made the claim after fresh plans to build seven houses on a field at Manor House in Manor Road were submitted to Telford & Wrekin Council.

It comes after another application for nine homes to be built next to the 14th century Grade II listed Provost's House, off the village's High Street, were lodged in December.

At a public meeting, attended by more than 200 people, campaigners warned there could be even more applications to come for other sites in the village.

Swamp

Campaign manager Mike Turner said: "This would swamp the village with new housing. No area of the village is safe."

He said the group was concerned that up to 400 houses could eventually be built in and around Edgmond if developers got their way.

Wrekin MP Mark Pritchard, who spoke at the meeting, said he had written to Telford & Wrekin Council urging planners to object to the potential loss of conservation area and open spaces.

He said: "I have objected to the plans as they stand but also called on the borough council to update the Edgmond conservation area plan and support Edgmond Parish Council in developing a local neighbourhood development plan, which would give added protections to the village from over-development."

A show of hands at the meeting was almost unanimous in opposition of the two applications – which have yet to be decided by planners or planning committee members.
