Simon Paul Jones made the threats to a police officer and to a probation officer, Mold Crown Court was told.

Jones, 22, of Swallow Drive in Newtown, was jailed for 17 months after he admitted assaulting his then partner in July of last year, and two charges of threatening to take revenge last October.

The couple had been in a relationship for about 18 months but it was alleged that he was manipulative and did not like her seeing her friends.

During an argument at her flat he pushed her back against a door, said prosecuting barrister Elen Owen.

Jones threatened her with an open pair of scissors, hurled food at her, threatened to stab her and, as he trashed her flat, grabbed her by the throat.

"He appeared to come out of something of a state and looked as if he had just woken up. He followed her to the bedroom and apologised," said Mr Owen.

But on his arrest he told a custody officer that he would get revenge on her. And while being interviewed by a probation officer for a pre-sentence report he spoke about stabbing her.

Phillip Clemo, defending, said that his client had an extremely troubled and difficult upbringing and described his criminal record as quite extraordinary for someone of his tender years.

He was under no illusion that custody was inevitable.
