Glynn Barnard, 32, is charged with assaulting Matthew Moffatt in Ludlow town centre, at the junction between Upper and Lower Galdeford, between October 18 and 21 last year.

Barnard, of Chestnut Grove, Ludlow, pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm at Shrewsbury Crown Court yesterday, but on the basis that his version of events, where he had been pursued and provoked by Mr Moffatt, was accepted.

Robert Edwards, prosecuting said: "A plea on that basis is not accepted by the Crown."

He said the trail would therefore go ahead.

Judge Peter Barrie adjourned for a hearing to decide the facts of the case, at a date to be set.
