Move to extend Newport's boundaries
The boundaries of Newport could be extended to include greenfield land where a supermarket and hundreds of houses are proposed.
Under the plans, significant pieces of land on either side of Station Road could move into Newport Town Council control from Chetwynd Aston & Woodcote Parish Council.
There are plans for a Sainsbury's supermarket and up to 350 houses on the land.
Newport Town Council is considering asking Telford & Wrekin Council for a Community Governance Review to make the change. It would take the southern boundary of Newport up to the A518. Councillors believe that would be a more natural place for the town to end.
At the moment the boundary ends at the start of the field and at the edge of Audley Avenue Industrial Estate.
At last night's full town council meeting, councillors decided to approach Chetwynd Aston and Woodcote about the possible change. Councillor Peter Scott said: "The more you think about it the more logical it seems."
Clerk Lee Jakeman said he had had informal discussions with Chetwynd Aston & Woodcote Parish Council, adding: "I haven't had a formal response yet. If it's favourable then we'll take it forward."
It comes after an electoral review of Telford & Wrekin by the local government boundary commission recommended combining the north and west and the south and east wards of Newport.
Newport would still have four borough councillors, but under the commission's reshuffle, the fields either side of Station Road would also be part of the town for electoral purposes.
