Barratt Homes is set to start construction work on its site in Hanwood Road, opposite the entrance to Bank Farm Road, in the next 12 months. The work, the builder says, will create 230 jobs.

Barratt sales director Graydon Worthing said: "We expect to launch the development on Hanwood Road in 2014. In total this will provide 118 desperately needed new homes for local people at a time when there is a chronic shortage of housing.

Recent indicators have suggested that the UK's housing market is on the up, with prices improving and sales volumes increasing.

That has been driven by improved consumer confidence and schemes such as Help to Buy, which provides funding for people looking to get onto the housing ladder.

The scheme is planned to be the first phase in a wider project that would see 550 homes being built on sites stretching up to the bottom of Mytton Oak Road, close to the hospital.
