Case adjourned over goalpost death of boy, 12
A football club that is accused of breaching health and safety regulations has appeared in court after a goalpost fell, killing a 12-year-old boy.
Casey Breese, from Caersws, near Newtown, was playing with friends at the village recreation ground on July 29, 2011, when he pulled his foot free from the goal net, causing the post to fall on him.
Nobody from Caersws Football Club, which trains and plays at the Recreation Ground, appeared at Welshpool Magistrates' Court yesterday and the case was adjourned to Mold Crown Court on October 18.
The club is charged with breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
Simon Parrington, prosecuting on behalf of Powys County Council, said: "This is an unusual case. On July 29, 2011 Casey Breese was killed when a goalpost fell on him as he played football with friends.
"The tubular steel goals fell forwards as he attempted to free himself from the goal net where he had been playing with five friends, taking it in turns to go in goal.
"A shot went above the goal and Casey flung himself across to try and save the ball and got his boot stuck in the net. He tugged his foot away as any other 12-year-old boy would and it caused the post to fall on to his back."
Huw Williams, for the club, added: "Bearing in mind it involves a fatality, it would be proper to deal with it at crown court." No indication of plea was entered.
