Owners Chris and Judy Bradley opened it 16 years ago after relocating from East Anglia. The couple, who have been together for 44 years, said they were delighted to once again receive the accolade.

Judy said: "They are not easy to win – and even harder to hang on to – so we are delighted to receive it again.

"This is our 22nd year in a row. We normally get inspected once a year, and it is the only guide where the inspectors actually come into the kitchens as well to see how things are being run.

"I think our success is down to a team effort. We never take our Michelin star for granted. We have 19 members of staff and 18 are local, which is unusual in this business. We are also very grateful to all of our suppliers, whose produce allows us to make really top-notch food.

"And of course a big thank you to our guests and customers, who keep coming back to visit us time and time again."

Mr Underhill's was also named by prestigious guide Hardens three years ago, as the UK's number one restaurant.

In the Michelin guide there are two restaurants promoted from one to two stars and 15 new ones that have been awarded one star.

Rebecca Burr, editor of the guide, said: "We have never produced a GB and Ireland guide that provides our readers with such diversity and variety. Fantastic B&Bs, wonderful pubs, stylish hotels, world class restaurants and great value eateries – we have them all in our guide."

The guide will be available from October 4 priced £15.99. It will also be available via an Apple App priced £5.99.
