Market Drayton parent and child parking spaces plea wins debate pledge
A public consultation event will be held in Market Drayton to seek people's views on whether it needs more parent and child spaces.
At last night's Market Drayton Town Council meeting, members agreed to hold the event following calls from residents to have more spaces installed.
The consultation event is due to take place on October 9 in the town hall at a time to be arranged.
It follows a campaign by mother-of-two, Emma Gledhill, who has criticised the town for not having any parent and child spaces in its main car parks.
She has launched a petition which has so far been signed by about 50 people who are supportive of the scheme.
Mrs Gledhill, whose daughters are Isabelle, three, and Rebecca, one, said she counted 33 disabled spaces and no parent and child spaces when she went around the town's main car parks.
The 32-year-old first raised her concerns at an annual town meeting in Market Drayton earlier this year, which councillors said they would look into.
Speaking at last night's meeting, Roger Hughes, Shropshire Councillor for Market Drayton, said: "I think this is quite a good idea. I suggest we hold a consultation event so the council can move it forward.
"This way it will have a better chance of success."
Councillor Mark Whittle added: "By holding a consulation event we can find out where people want these spaces rather than just shove them in."
Speaking after the meeting Mrs Gledhill, who said she has found it difficult to get her children in and out of her car safely, said she was pleased her proposal was moving forward.
