Patricia Scott, of Barnmeadow Close, died on Wednesday after a short illness.

Miss Scott taught at Newport Junior School from 1963 to 1992, quickly working her way up to deputy head.

She was also a long-standing Girl Guide leader. Friend Tavia Maclean, 92, said Miss Scott was a passionate teacher.

She said: "She was always interested in where education was going. She felt very strongly that children should be encouraged to have hobbies and she was very proud of people who made their hobbies their careers.

"Pat broke her arm some weeks ago but until then I went out with her every week.

Thomas Kay, who was the head teacher at the school while Miss Scott was deputy, said she was very keen on discipline. The 94-year-old said: "She was a darn good teacher and a disciplinarian. Pat gave a lot to Newport youngsters, no doubt about that."

Carol Murphy taught at the school from 1969 to 1977 and also had a daughter who was at guides under Miss Scott.

She said: "She provided real life experiences for the girls – they had to do everything themselves.

The funeral is yet to be arranged.
