A campaign group has called for landlords in Newtown to reduce rents, or risk other firms following DVD rental giant Blockbuster in leaving the town.
The 21st Century Newtown Action Group said it was 'saddened' Blockbuster was shutting, with the possibility of several jobs going.
Philip Glynn, group leader, said a number of other firms left the town recently, which he blamed on town centre rent prices.
He said: "I hear that two others are also seriously considering the future.
"I also learn another of the nationals – I will not say which – has had their costs increased and the future of the shop is in doubt. These closures are being made by landlords increasing rents. When will they see sense and reduce rents?"
Other firms to have pulled out of town recently include Little Chef, Focus DIY, Shop Direct. But the Spar in Broad Street has reopened after a fire and Poundstretcher has opened in the old Focus store in Pool Road.
