Firefighters took 90 minutes to cut an elderly man free from his car after a two-vehicle crash on a main road on the outskirts of Bridgnorth.

The accident happened on the A458 close to Bridgnorth Livestock Market shortly before 1pm yesterday.

Firefighters from Bridgnorth and Much Wenlock used hydraulic cutting equipment to cut the side and roof off one of the vehicles, a blue Toyota Avensis.

The Toyota is believed to have pulled out from Wenlock Road onto the main A458 and was in collision with a Land Rover Discovery.

Constable Tim Street, of Ludlow Police Station, said: "A woman from the Shropshire area was driving on the A458 towards the island in a Land Rover.

"The elderly gentleman in the other car pulled out and there was a side impact."

The elderly man's wife was treated at the scene for shock.

Josh Warwick, crew manager at Bridgnorth Fire Station, said: "Two vehicles were involved in a collision. One person was still in the car when we arrived.

"He was not really trapped, he was unable to get out without a struggle. We had to create a space to get him out. He was aged about 80.

"He was complaining of a pain in his shoulder and his right leg. He was taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital by land ambulance."

The air ambulance was called to the scene but was not needed to transport the casualty.

The road was partially blocked during the incident.
