Pots of gel which trick pigeons into thinking their favourite landing spots are on fire so they won't nest are now in place in Bridgnorth.

Officials hope the gel, which is being supplied for free, will stop the pests from nesting at the town hall.

The town hall was cordoned off yesterday while workers placed about 50 pots of the gel around the High Street building.

Bridgnorth Town Council had been approached by a company offering to apply the non-toxic gel.

Adam Rozga, from Birdsaway.co.uk, part of Madeley company Dagar Tools, said: "This is the first building we have done in Shropshire. There has been a lot of interest. Birmingham Council is starting to look at it and Severn Trent Water."

Mr Rozga said they may also put the gel on a bridge in Bewdley.

Councillor Adrian Tacchi had said: "I think it seems quite brilliant that you can come up with a gel that pigeons and gulls, and the like, think is fire."
