A £120,000 refurbishment of two major roads in a Shropshire town centre will begin next week after one of them was described as looking more like the surface of the moon due to the number of potholes.

The works to Broad Street and Mill Street in Ludlow are part of a county-wide programme costing just under £1.5million announced by Shropshire Council this summer.

Ludlow Councillor Martin Taylor-Smith, who is also Shropshire Council's head of transport, said the road in Mill Street "looked like a lunar surface".

He said: "The works are some of the 160 schemes across the county that we are trying to get done before the end of March .

"The timing was limited by making sure it didn't clash with the Food Festival or the Medieval Fair. There was a slight delay which has meant it has run into half term.

"We keep patching the roads and it only lasts for a short period It'll save us money in the long run because we won't be patching it so much."

Parking will be suspended in Broad Street from next Monday and it will be closed to traffic on Thursday and Friday between the Brand Lane and Bell Lane junction and the Broadgate.

Bell Lane and Brand Lane will also be closed on Wednesday that week.

The following week, work will start on Mill Street on October 25, lasting five days.

The entrance to Bell Lane from Mill Street will be closed from Wednesday to Thursday and Camp Lane and Silkmill Lane will also be closed on Thursday and Friday.
