Shropshire's Telford MP David Wright has retained his post as a Labour whip in Ed Miliband's first shadow team.

The newly-elected Labour leader has unveiled the rising stars of his "new generation" taking on junior ministerial roles in his shadow cabinet.

Some 23 newly-elected MPs have been awarded with a junior post out of the 66-strong Labour intake in the May general election.

These include Gloria De Piero, the former GMTV political correspondent who joins the shadow culture, media and sport team; Michael Dugher, a former Downing Street spokesmen for ex-PM Gordon Brown, has been given a role in defence; and Chuka Umanna has been named Mr Miliband's new parliamentary private secretary. Others given a fast-track promotion to Labour's front bench include Liz Kendall (health); Rachel Reeves (work and pensions); Emma Reynolds (Foreign Office); Shabana Mahmood (Home Office); Tom Greatrex (Scotland); Chi Onwurah (business); Sharon Hodgson (education); Luciana Berger (energy) and John Woodcock (transport).

Jack Dromey, husband of Harriet Harman, Labour's deputy leader, has been made a spokesman on communities and local government.

Diane Abbott, who came last in the contest, has become shadow minister for public health.

After 23 years as a backbencher and more recently a TV presenter, Ms Abbott will work alongside John Healey, the shadow health secretary.
