Death-crash road set for improvements

A road near Shrewsbury where a 22-year-old woman died in a collision just over 18 months ago is to undergo improvements to improve its safety and reduce the number of accidents.

Shropshire County Council today said it planned to improve signs and markings on the bend of the unclassified road at Longden Common.

It also comes after Vicki Pinches, of Ratlinghope, died after she was involved in a collision with a bus at Longden Common in June 2007

Parish councillors and residents have called for improvements on safety the bend. And there have been calls for maintenance along the road as a whole from Longden Common to Pulverbatch.

Council spokesman Simon Alton said it was hoped the work could be carried out by the end of summer.

"The road, particularly the stretch between Pulverbatch and Longden Common, is recognised as being in need of maintenance."

Mr Alton said concerns raised about the bend meant it would also be included in the maintenance programme, with better signs and markings aimed at reducing accidents.

Vicki's mum Sue Pinches said she was concerned about wider buses using the road. County councillor Yvonne Holyoak welcomed the announcement.
