People and animals were left stranded by rising water in Shropshire today as more rain was forecast for the county today.

All three emergency services were called to Buildwas Road in Ironbridge at 12.20am when a passer-by thought a man was trapped in the swollen River Severn. Crews from Tweedale, Much Wenlock and Wellington fire stations and Incident Commander Rob Corfield, from Shrewsbury, were initially called out.

The rescue pump, the boat and boat-towing vehicle were also sent to the scene.

But when crews realised the man was not in the water, but with his car at the bottom of a track, many of the crews, and the ambulance, were stood down.

Much Wenlock firefighters and the police got the man's car to the top of the track and he drove home unharmed.Mr Corfield, of Shropshire Fire and Rescue said: "It was a false alarm with good intent.

"The man had driven his vehicle down a steep gravel track and had nowhere to go. Fire crews and the police managed to move it for the man."

Dozens of cows were stranded in fields around Shrewsbury, with many trapped near the A49 between Preston Island and Sundorne Island and more surrounded by water in a field by the river at Telford Way.

The river was due to peak in Shrewsbury this morning, allowing the animals to get through the water as it begins to drop.

Shropshire Star weatherman John Warner said more rain was in store for the county today, but the rest of the week was looking much brighter.

He said: "There is some fairly heavy rain coming through this morning accompanied by strong winds but it shouldn't be as heavy as it was on Sunday.

"Wednesday should be much brighter, still breezy and with one or two isolated showers.

"Thursday will be warmer, hopefully with plenty of sun and although there may be a little rain on Saturday Sunday should be fine again."

Environment Agency officials today urged people in the county to focus on their safety in the event of a flood, put people before property and co-operate with the emergency services if they tell you to evacuate an area during flooding.
