Despite admitting some last-minute nerves, the wife of former Tory leader Michael Howard wowed the crowds at Wellington Literary Festival.
Author Sandra Howard, a former fashion model, was grilled on stage for more than an hour by Councillor Gary Davies, festival chairman.
The mother-of-three told a full house at Wrekin College's Centenary Theatre about her life and career, including her critically acclaimed novel, Glass Houses, and second book Ursula's Story. Mr Davies said they covered a huge range of topics and the audience was able to ask questions.
"She was never stuck for an answer," he said. "I truthfully think everybody enjoyed themselves. It was just great to meet her."Mrs Howard, who now splits her time between London and Kent, told the audience about her upbringing, which involved moving on several occasions because her father worked in the forces.
She also spoke of her four marriages, her first at 18, and now to Michael Howard, to whom she has been married for 33 years.
Mr Davies said: "We also talked about the Press. She thought it was great and long live the freedom of the Press.
"She said she never wanted to be a typical Tory wife. I asked her what she thought that was and she said something about the blue hair brigade."
He added that she also spoke about her stammer, "which she admits can be difficult, but she puts it behind her."
