NHS staff deserve our praise

The media in this country seems to thrive on negativity, with the NHS a regular target.

However, our recent experience under the care of the maternity staff at both Shrewsbury and Telford hospitals has restored our faith in human nature.

My wife gave birth to our son Alfie on July 24 at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

From admission to discharge two days later she received first-class care.

The midwives, in particular Claire Beaman, Emma Williams, Jill Overton and Kelly (trainee), showed extremely high levels of professionalism, compassion and understanding.

Kate Pickering, the midwife who started the maternity care via our surgery, Linden Hall in Newport, which provides an excellent service, started the ball rolling. All of the home visits were friendly and personal, and the final appointment was at the Telford Maternity Unit, where mother and baby were fully checked then discharged.

My wife describes these ladies as a different breed - hard-working professionals who are constantly taken for granted.

Clearly, our NHS is under-resourced. We constantly hear of people suffering because of it, yet rarely do we have the opportunity to hear about the successes.
