Police officers and dog handlers swooped on a house in Whitchurch last night to arrest David Alan Price.

Price, 32, of Wem, failed to return to Sudbury prison on February 18. He is serving a seven-and-a-half-year sentence for drugs offences.

Inspector Neil Spencer said: "Whitchurch police staged an operation in order to arrest Mr Price at a house in the Whitchurch area last night.

"The operation was carried out as a result of intelligence received and although no forced entry was required, sufficient resources were available."

West Mercia Police were alerted by Derbyshire Police after Price absconded from the controversial open prison last month.

Although there had been no evidence to suggest Price would return to the north Shropshire area, his last known address was in Wem.

A Derbyshire Police spokeswoman said today: "We received a call from West Mercia Police at 10.25pm yesterday to say he had been arrested at 9.10pm and was being detained at Shrewsbury police station."

It has not yet been confirmed whether Price will face any charges as a result of absconding from prison.

He was jailed after being convicted of playing a part in a major drugs ring involved in smuggling cocaine worth about £250,000.He was one of nine people caught as part of Operation Bountiful.

West Mercia police spokesman Richard Ewels said: "Price is currently in custody at Shrewsbury and we are liaising with the Prison Service and Derbyshire Police and he will return to prison in due course."
