Authority faces cash shortfall

I wondered if Mr Lawson, a resident of Montgomery, might wish to modify his congratulations for Councillor Nutting's poll of public opinion (Starmail, January 10) in view of the article which appeared in the Star on that same evening.

Mr Lawson confidently states that "Shrewsbury folk have monies available".

However, SABC's head of finance, who should know how the figures stack up, is saying completely the opposite. The authority faces a massive funding shortfall and has only £5 million to pay for projects such as the Music Hall revamp, a new swimming centre, a proposed second sports village, etc. Residents might want to think about how they feel about the possibility of having the municipal golf course sold off to fund the projects of this administration.

They might also want to think about what they believe about the claims by Councillor Nutting in the unitary authority debate.
