Postpone decisions on changes
It is clear that there is a great deal of disquiet within Shropshire about the proposed local government reorganisation in both Shropshire County Council and Telford & Wrekin.
It is clear that there is a great deal of disquiet within Shropshire about the proposed local government reorganisation in both Shropshire County Council and Telford & Wrekin.
I have already expressed support for Telford's intention to become part of the West Midlands City Region. It is essential that they have a seat at the table in any discussion on the future of West Midlands industry.
The worry is how effectively can they wear two hats?
We await evidence that Telford & Wrekin and Shropshire County Councils are working together to map out a strategic policy for Shropshire. We are in urgent need of a joint statement from the leaders of the two authorities on this issue.
With regard to Shropshire County Council's application for unitary status, we are being rushed out of all reason into putting in an application by 25 January.
Much more time is required for the public to understand and reach agreement on the issues involved.
My colleagues on the county council are aware that I have two reservations about the unitary proposal.
I believe Shrewsbury, as county town, should have a special status in a unitary authority. Also, there seems to be an intention to sideline the parish councils in favour of unelected local committees, which, if they ever come about should be made up of elected councillors.
There could be a great deal of benefit in terms of public awareness and consent if the application for a unitary authority could be delayed for six-12 months.
John Roberts County Councillor, Loton Division
