A 68-year-old Mid Wales grandmother has died in hospital two weeks after falling down a coal chute, it was revealed today. Theresa Glynn died at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.
The grandmother, of Edwardsfield, Newtown, died at the hospital on October 28, after falling down the chute in Clifton Terrace. A spokesman for John Ellery, coroner for Mid and North Shropshire, said formal identification was due to take place in Shrewsbury today.
Mrs Glynn was admitted to Montgomeryshire County Infirmary on October 17 with cuts and bruises and was moved to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital two days later. She was discharged but later readmitted with an infection.
Mrs Glynn, a mother of six and grandmother to 14, fell down the chute outside Clifton Dental Practice. Her son Mike said the family had been completely stunned by what had happened.
He said he wanted people to be aware of what had happened in the hope of preventing future accidents.
"We have lost our mother and grandmother and God forbid it should happen to someone else's mother," he said. "We are all in shock really, we just can't believe it."
A Powys County Council spokesman said two chute covers were found to be loose in the street.
He said: "We did receive a report of a loose former coal chute cover in Clifton Terrace. We went down there and put barriers up.
"While we were there we were informed that another cover was loose on the street and that a lady had fallen into a chute. We made both chutes safe and secured them."
