Charges for drivers
The splendid coverage on the front of the Shropshire Star gave us all in Shrewsbury an insight into what our representatives are going to propose - the con charge, sorry, congestion charge.
However what amazed me was the statement by the council's chief executive, that owing to the loss of parking space at Frankwell, Gay Meadow, Barker Street and other sites around the town, the council did not have much alternative.
Hang on, it's the chief executive who proposed and put forward to the council all the schemes.
He will no doubt, together with all the councillors, get a free pass for the congestion charge.
There has been no thought on the overall effect on the environment.
If I want to go from the north of the town to the south for, say, the hospital, I will have a choice, that being public transport - I do not have the time to take that - pay the proposed charge, or go around the link road. This will mean an extra 10 miles burning fossil fuels and emitting C02, possibly passing the council mayor's car en route for another Britain in Bloom photo shoot.
In the meantime the people who live on the approach roads in Kingsland, Mountfields, Copthorne will have issues with people dumping their cars in the streets around the zone. All this to support the heavy spending of this council.
