An age when rail was king
Pictures of the Past showed the Whittington level crossing on the Shrewsbury to Chester main line. But I wonder how many people realise that Whittington once boasted two railway stations up to the mid-Sixties.
That is until the notorious Dr Beeching had his way and closed the high level station that was on the Old Cambrian railway from Whitchurch to Oswestry and beyond.
The station (high level) was situated between the Gobowen Road and the point where it crossed the main line (low level).
The station (halt) was only accessible by foot but served a purpose for shopping in Oswestry or visiting Park Hall Camp, which had its own halt known as Tinkers Green Halt.
I hope this will jog people's memory of the grand old days when the railways ran just about everywhere.
