Charges not answer to jams
Other than, or in addition to, congestion charging, tolls and charging motorists for mileage travelled, there are other simpler, quicker measures and steps which the Government could take to reduce congestion, pollution and fuel consumption.
These include putting freight back on the railways to reduce the number of heavy goods vehicles on our roads, as often it is heavy goods lorries which slow traffic up, are the cause of accidents, cause vibration damage to roads and buildings and are a danger to pedestrians.
Also let shops and supermarkets stay open later so that everyone is not shopping at the same time.
Firms could operate a flexi-time start, so everyone is not on the roads trying to get to work between 8.30am and 9am and farmers could avoid using tractors on major roads between 8am and 9am and 5pm and 6pm.
And make it compulsory for all children living within a mile of their school to walk to school. This would reduce traffic and help fight the obesity.
