Why is Islam in the dock?

I was very angered by the letter of Richard Camp (Star letters, September 5) at what he says about Islam. I'm a white, British 19-year-old female convert to Islam, and have lived in England all of my life as a westerner.

I was very hurt when Mr Camp wrote that Islam was incompatible with Christianity and the Western way of life. I feel that until Mr Camp himself has lived as a Muslim in the West, he has no right to say this.

If this is the case, why is it that Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world? Why are there so many more women becoming Muslim in England and America if Islam is so oppressing and so anti-Western?

It is every Muslim's duty to greet people with Salaam (meaning peace) as the first thing to say. In Islam we respect both Jews and Christians, in the Quran they are called "people of the book" - never are they insulted.

I understand why some people are "anti-Islam". I can admit, I myself was at one point too after 9/11, it was after this incident I decided to stop following the media and start finding out myself, what Islam is.

If we all judge a religion by the way some people act, then people would put Christianity and the IRA murders together, and Christianity and Adolf Hitler with the Holocaust, but we all know these are acts of people and not the Christian religion itself.

So why when a bad Muslim does a crime, Islam goes to court?
