Theories fly after UFO sightings

Two mystery UFOs seen racing across the Shropshire sky may be lights from the International Space Station, an expert said today. But other theories put forward have suggested meteorites or lights from RAF Shawbury helicopters.

The unusual bright lights were seen at about 9pm on Monday by people across the county and were described as moving rapidly but without any sound.

Astronomer and Shropshire Star photographer Pete Shah, of Meifod, Powys, said "I was in my observatory and the lights appeared to fade and then disappear. I checked the predictions for the International Space Station and it was overhead."

But Jay Tate, of Knighton observatory in Powys, said sporadic meteorites were also common at this time of year.

Mr Tate said: "Although a lot of people think they are very low, they burn out 30 to 40 miles above the ground."

David Woodward, chair of the Shrewsbury Astronomical Society suggested they were helicopters from RAF Shawbury.

He added: "They do exercises at night and can be seen for miles.

But Mrs Dawn Udall, who saw the lights over Admaston at 12.20am, said: "There were two - extremely bright. It was a very eerie experience as they definitely were not aeroplane or helicopter lights."
