The Atlas beetle lives at Telford's Exotic Zoo and owner Scott Adams used it as a demonstration when he appeared on Blue Peter yesterday.

Mr Adams, in Donnington, has become the programme's resident animal man and makes regular appearances teaching children more about the natural world

He said: "It was an educational piece about beetles and we were talking about some of Britain's beetles.

"We took along some larger beetles from across the world."

The Atlas beetle, a kind of Rhinocerous beetle which is among the strongest creature in the world.

It is one of the newest arrivals at the exotic zoo and will join Mr Adams on his work in the community.

He regularly takes some of the animals into schools, care homes and to events across the county where the animals are used for teaching and therapy.

He said: "We haven't taken the beetle out anywhere just yet but we go into schools quite regularly to do work on minibeasts so I think this will be a really exciting animal.

"We do lots of events over the summer and I think it will be coming out with us over the holidays."

Mr Adams said his work on Blue Peter is also helping with his work in the borough, as more and more children are starting to recognise the animals that they see on television.

He also recorded another segment for another Cbeebies programme to be shown later this year.
