Denmark international Viktor Fischer has returned to his homeland after completing a transfer to FC Copenhagen from Mainz.

The 23-year-old, who only joined the German side in the summer from Middlesbrough, has moved to the Danish champions on a five-year contract for an undisclosed fee.

Fischer made 12 appearances for Sandro Schwarz’s team, but he only started on five occasions and failed to complete 90 minutes in any of the matches.

Sporting director Rouven Schroder told mainz05.de: “We spoke to Viktor for some time and he came to the decision that he wanted to leave the club.

“We’d have loved to have continued working with him in Mainz but he would have to be totally committed to the club and therefore we decided it best to let him go. We wish Viktor well in Copenhagen.”

Mainz also confirmed the departure of 23-year-old goalkeeper Jannik Huth to Sparta Rotterdam on a loan deal until the end of the season.
