Shrewsbury Town boss Gavin Cowan confirms brief talks with prospective new owner

Gavin Cowan insisted his focus must remain on Shrewsbury Town’s matters on the pitch.

Gavin Cowan has revealed he has spoken to Shrewsbury Town’s prospective new owners - but insists he will not get drawn into the takeover situation.

The Salop boss said he has had a brief introduction with the American consortium, led by Miami businessman Scott Davidson and including former Premier League goalkeeper Bradley Friedel.

However, Cowan says his focus remains firmly on matters on the pitch and that he will leave the takeover to others.

Asked if he had spoken to the prospective owners, Cowan said: “Yeah, just a hello, just an introduction.

“But listen, the chairman is the owner of the football club until I hear any different.

“I take my orders from the chairman. So, the best thing for me to say is that I’ve got to stay out of that.

“I’m an employee of the football club. So I do my best, of course.

“And if this goes through, then I think we’ve got a lot to thank the chairman for. I think it’s completely unprecedented, 30 years of doing it - and if he continues to do it, because I don’t know, I stay out of those conversations.

“But if new people come in, it’s clearly exciting because it’s something different.

“So, look, I’m quite good at being a compartmentalist. I just put that to one side and I’ll wait to hear from any information that’s fed back to me.”

Town’s 2-0 home win over Northampton came a day after the latest takeover developments, with the identity of the prospective new owners revealed.

Should the deal be finalised in the near future, it would bring an end to Roland Wycherley’s 30-year ownership of the club - a tenure Cowan has praised.

Kian McMahon-Brown and Kevin Berkoe struck in the first half to fire Salop to back-to-back home wins and their second victory of the new League Two campaign.

And amid the off-field developments, Cowan was delighted to see his players keep their focus where it mattered and get the job done on the pitch.

Asked if that made the win more pleasing, he said: “Yes, absolutely. It’s easy for them to ask questions, and I haven’t even spoken to them about it.

“It’s (about) controlling the controllables, and whatever happens on that side happens.

“We’ve just got to do our job here in the meantime, on the field, on the training ground. That’s what the chairman would want, any prospective new owners would want, they want us focussing on this.

“They’re not going to want me worrying about what’s going on there. I’ll get that fed back to me. My job isn't to go and ask those questions.

“It’s to get on the training field, prepare these players, work with my staff and make sure that we get the results on the pitch.”
