Jamie Tolley: Shrewsbury Town’s potential new owners have caught my attention

Our columnist Jamie Tolley shares his thoughts on Shrewsbury Town’s prospective new owners.

Make Shrewsbury Town Great Again! I’ve had people sending me pictures of an AI-generated image of me wearing a cap with those words on it.

It’s all very exciting after the potential new owners of Shrewsbury Town were revealed.

Town are closer to a takeover than they have ever been, with Miami businessman Scott Davidson confirmed as the man behind the consortium. And now I’m looking forward to seeing what we’re potentially going to have to dress up in - cowboy hats, the lot!

Former Premier League star Bradley Friedel is also part of the group, and having someone with his experience is a massive bonus.

He is a huge name in football, particularly here in England and, of course, back in the United States, where he represented his country at World Cups. Having someone who knows football at that level involved, and who could become a director, can only bode well.

And then you have the man at the helm. If you look at Davidson’s CV, he is not just a businessman - he knows his football.

He is the owner of Spartans in Scotland and has done a remarkable job there, winning promotion and coming close to another. They have built a brilliant foundation.

He clearly understands how the British game works and what is needed to succeed, so there is a lot of optimism and excitement from me when you look at the people who could be coming into the football club.

Of course, nothing has been completed yet, so we have to reserve a little judgement until these guys are in place. There is always that slight chance of something not happening or not going to plan.

But when you take a step back and look at the potential new owners, it really does excite you.

Who knows where Shrewsbury could go with that level of investment, expertise and knowledge? It is certainly a time to be excited.

Should the takeover go through, it would bring an end to Roland Wycherley’s ownership.

I wrote earlier this week about his contribution to the club, and while this is the news everyone has been waiting for after years of takeover talk, we should not forget what he has done over his 30 years at the helm.

He has received plenty of criticism, but it is now probably best for both parties to move on. One thing I have never doubted, though, is that he loves this football club.
