Shrewsbury Town set for Scottish club relationship under prospective new owners

The Scottish club set to have a new link with Shrewsbury Town.

Shrewsbury Town could form an ‘informal relationship’ with Scottish side Spartans if its American takeover is completed.

Shrewsbury confirmed today that the consortium seeking to acquire the club is being led by businessman Scott Davidson, who is also the majority shareholder of Scottish League Two side Spartans.

Davidson, who made his money in real estate, has been given the green light by the English Football League (EFL) and Independent Football Regulator (IFR) to purchase Town.

Spartans say the deal is still awaiting approval from the Scottish Football Association (SFA), although reports in Scotland suggest the governing body is supportive.

A statement from Spartans highlighted the opportunity for the two clubs to “share knowledge and experience”.

It read: “The deal has yet to be finalised and is yet to receive SFA approval.

“The proposed new board of Shrewsbury Town FC will be chaired by Scott and will also include fellow Spartans directors Will Dotson and Craig Graham, subject to IFR clearance which is expected this week, as well as Brad Friedel the US International and ex Premier League goal-keeper.

“There will be an informal relationship between Spartans FC and Shrewsbury Town FC which will allow both of us to benefit from sharing knowledge and experience.

“We also both have excellent community foundations, this deal will provide valuable opportunities for collaboration and mutual learning. Further information will be shared as the acquisition process proceeds.”

Spartans currently sit fourth in Scottish League Two, while Irish forward Ricardo Dinanga joined the club on loan from Shrewsbury during the summer transfer window.

Davidson became a director and majority shareholder of the Edinburgh-based club in July 2021.

He enjoyed instant success, leading Spartans to promotion from the Lowland League into the SPFL for the first time in the club’s history.

Spartans have since continued to develop their football foundation, with community work also a key focus at Shrewsbury.
