Reform slammed for 'attack' on new Shrewsbury business run by Gurkha family

The group slammed the new business in a now-deleted social media post

The Shrewsbury branch of Reform UK has been slammed after an “attack” on a new business run by a local Gurkha family.

The Shrewsbury Bazaar grocery shop opened in Shoplatch this week, with a grand opening ceremony attended by Mayor of Shrewsbury Bernie Bentick.

Ahead of the opening, Reform UK Shrewsbury took to social media to question the legitimacy of the business, claiming “nobody seems to know who is behind it” and criticised Councillor Bentick for agreeing to cut the ribbon.

The now-deleted social media post said: “Shrewsbury is a historic market town, a genuine tourist destination, and its town centre is being hollowed out.

“Dodgy Turkish/Kurdish barbers and questionable international food shops are changing the face of our high streets.”

The post has been slammed by the local Liberal Democrats, who said the store was being run by a local Gurkha family who had brought life into an empty shop.

A spokesperson for Liberal Democrats Shrewsbury said: “We’re disappointed to see Reform UK Shrewsbury attack Shrewsbury Bazaar, a new independent business run by a local Gurkha family.

“These are entrepreneurs investing in our town, bringing life to an empty shop and contributing to our local economy. They deserve support, not hostility.

“For over 200 years, thousands of Gurkhas have served Britain with exceptional courage, loyalty and sacrifice. Many have given their lives in British service, earning a special place in our nation’s history and our lasting gratitude.

“It is an example of how Shrewsbury is stronger for the many communities who call our town home.

“We’re proud that our Mayor of Shrewsbury, Councillor Bernie Bentick, supported the opening. A mayor should represent everyone, and Bernie is working hard to do just that every day.”

Reform Shrewsbury has been approached for comment.
