‘I’m not Jurgen Klopp’ - Gavin Cowan explains Shrewsbury Town celebration decision

The Town boss explained why he left players to lead the three cheers.

Gavin Cowan revealed why he has not recently done the three cheers celebration at Shrewsbury Town - insisting: “I’m not Jurgen Klopp.”

The celebration with supporters became a familiar sight at the Meadow during Town’s revival under Cowan in the second half of last season. But after applauding supporters, he left it to his players after Saturday’s 2-0 win over Northampton, just as he did after victory over Salford City on home soil.

Kian McMahon-Brown led the celebrations instead, and Cowan explained afterwards why he has not done the tradition.

“The reason I did it last year is because every win was a cup final, because we were staying in the league,” he said.

“If we remember, it’s this staff, it’s a lot of these players that kept us in the league.

“When we came in in January, it was a lost cause. It’s the brilliance of the staff and the players that did that, and even the players that departed.

“We want to improve this year, but it isn’t going to come overnight. But for me now, there’s a lot of work that goes on and I have to head it up. I have to spearhead it, of course.

“But I just felt as though it was the players and the staff that deserved that today. I don’t need to be doing three fist pumps every game, I’m not Jurgen Klopp.

“I can’t get emotional with a win today. For me, it’s relief, it’s not enjoyment, it’s relief.

“I’m really pleased for the players, I’m really pleased for the staff, and they deserve that today.

“It’s not about me. It’s about the club. It’s about them, us as a group. So, yeah, there was not too much behind it, I just wanted to make it about them.”
