Shrewsbury Town notebook: Loanee’s dream home debut and the other Northampton talking points
Key talking points from Shrewsbury Town’s win over Northampton Town at the Meadow.
Shrewsbury Town secured back-to-back home wins with victory over Northampton Town.
Kian McMahon-Brown impressed on his home debut and fired Town ahead, before Kevin Berkoe doubled their advantage before half-time.
Here are some notebook thoughts from the win:
Ruffels back
Josh Ruffels returned straight to the starting XI after recovering from injury.
The experienced defender has endured some difficult moments during the opening weeks of the season, but he was back in the side with no recognised central defenders on the bench.
Isaac Lee and Tom Anderson both missed out, although Luca Hoole’s inclusion at wing-back gave Gavin Cowan the option to reshuffle if required.
New midfield duo
Tom Sang partnered Jay Turner-Cooke in central midfield, marking the first time the pair had started together in the middle of the park.
The duo offered energy and composure, with Sang also playing a key role in Town’s second goal.
Loanee takes his chance
Kian McMahon-Brown had shown plenty of promise in his appearances before Saturday, and he took his chance emphatically to give Salop the lead.
Positioned on the edge of the box, the Burnley loanee produced a brilliant finish into the corner.

He almost had a second when his effort struck the post.
McMahon-Brown was a constant threat and one of the afternoon’s standout performers. His home debut could hardly have gone better.
Brook interventions
Will Brook made several excellent saves to deny Northampton.
It was an important afternoon for Brook, who made some key interventions when Town needed him.
Berkoe moment
Kevin Berkoe has enjoyed a strong start to the season and continued to make an impact down Town’s left flank.
This time, though, he was not creating a goal - he was scoring one.

The wing-back showed good awareness to find space inside the box and finish, doubling Salop’s advantage shortly before the break.
It was an important goal and his first for the club.
Caps off a dramatic week
It has been a busy week at Shrewsbury Town, with developments surrounding the proposed takeover dominating the headlines.
The identities of the American consortium were revealed just a day before Saturday’s game, adding another layer to an already eventful period for the club.
But Town delivered where it mattered on the pitch. This was a much-needed victory after a difficult start to the campaign, and Cowan will hope it can provide the platform for a change in fortunes.
