'Commitment and calculated risks' - Gavin Cowan opens up on Shrewsbury midfielder's impact

The midfielder, who joined Shrewsbury in 2025, is an important cog in Gavin Cowan’s machine.

Gavin Cowan hailed Shrewsbury Town’s Tom Sang as a classic example of the commitment he desires at the club.

Midfielder Sang has endured some criticism since moving to Town in 2025 but performances this season have him among the leading creative forces in League Two.

Shrewsbury boss Cowan is a huge admirer of the 27-year-old and insists he has the type of “commitment” and “risk” to his game that the manager desires.

Cowan said: "I do believe in energy. If you have that positive mindset, be on the front foot and take calculated risks.

"I speak about Sangy - I know he gets stick, but you're talking about someone who commits to everything.

"Let's put a spin on everything. He's at the top of all the chances created stats, but we moan when he kicks the ball behind the goal.

"He's going to do that from time to time unfortunately. Footballers, if they're committed, are going to make mistakes.”

Cowan’s side have enjoyed an improved run of form tonight including crunch wins over Grimsby, Bristol Rovers and Crawley.

The last two League Two fixtures involving Town have delivered 11 goals and four points and Salopians will be determined to keep the improved mood running beyond Saturday’s visit of Gillingham, managed by controversial former boss Gareth Ainsworth.

Former Manchester United and Cardiff man Sang, 27, has started in all 13 of Shrewsbury’s League Two fixtures so far this term, playing the full 90 minutes more often than not.

"We put a rhetoric on it that more often than not he's going to put the ball on the money,” the manager added. “He's just one example of the players and the training ground.

"We have to keep this energy. It's all well and good when we're winning. To change a culture you have to maintain that. We ask the supporters to trust us.”
