Jon Nolan targets top two for Shrewsbury after 'massive' result

Shrewsbury goalscoring hero Jon Nolan believes Town’s win at Scunthorpe was a key result in their target of a top-two finish.

Nolan orchestrated Town’s second-half turnaround in sub-zero conditions at Glanford Park. The midfielder made it seven goals this season when he nutmegged Matt Gilks with a calm finish after a one-two with Carlton Morris.

Nolan, who has a goal target of 10 for the season, then out-foxed ex-Town loanee Ivan Toney to win a stonewall penalty converted by substitute Stefan Payne.

He said: “It was exactly that, an impressive fightback. We came in at half-time and, we weren’t too bad in the first half, but Doigy (Chris Doig) gave us a bit of a telling off.

“I think that showed in the second half, we were on the front foot, winning tackles and playing to the conditions.”

Nolan, who scored from the spot at Blackburn in January but missed at Charlton recently, added: “It was a clear penalty for me. I’ve chopped him, tried to step past him and couldn’t. There weren’t too many shouts from them.

“There was no chance they were letting me take it. Stef’s probably the best penalty taker in the team.”

Paul Hurst’s men are two points off leaders Blackburn with the chance to go top with a win at Northampton tomorrow night.

“It’s a massive result,” Nolan added. “We can’t deny that. They’re our rivals and in the play-offs.

“It’s three points closer to our target, which is to go up automatically.

“We don’t want the play-offs, we’re going to fight until the very end to finish in that top two.

“Five away wins in a row. We’re different class away from home. The fans follow us everywhere. If I was them I’d have been sat at home with a cup of tea!”
