Shrewsbury Town plan further signings
Shrewsbury Town boss Micky Mellon insists his summer transfer business isn't done as he looks to bring in more defenders.
The Scot completed his seventh signing of the close season on Friday by snapping up attacking midfielder Jim O'Brien following his release from Coventry.
Mellon has already brought in centre-backs Olly Lancashire and Ryan McGivern this month and also has Dom Smith who can play at the heart of the defence.
But with Nat Knight-Percival yet to sign a new deal and Zak Whitbread and Jermaine Grandison having been released, Mellon feels he needs more strength in depth.
He said: "I'm very happy with the group we have now but I'm always looking to try to improve it. There are still one or two bits of business we'd like to try to get done.
"We're going to have to try to strengthen the defence. We're still speaking to the likes of Natty (Nathaniel Knight-Percival) and Weso (James Wesolowski).
"We're working very hard to improve the group all the time but we're certainly very pleased with how it is, at the minute."
Mellon will assess his squad further once the players have returned for pre-season training.
He said: "The lads are back on Thursday so they'll be getting ready for it. Their holiday is coming to an end and we'll be getting back into getting their fitness levels up.
"We'll get the group integrated and getting to know each other and looking forward to starting the season."
Meanwhile, Scotland-born O'Brien has revealed he is looking forward to teaming up with Mellon again after the pair previously worked together at Barnsley.
O'Brien said: "On the first day at Barnsley he was straight over asking where I was from, how I was doing. I think it was the Scottish thing.
"So right from the word 'go' it was a decent relationship. I kept in contact once he left, because I liked working with him.
"You know where the line is with him. He's quite relaxed but if you overstep the line you know he can get quite aggressive."
